A letter from the Chairman

We at the Friends of the National Zoo had a successful fun walk on Saturday the 15th of October, with 437 participants who each received the Dolphin medal, and who also join us in our activities.

This is only one of the 12 walks held during the year, and each month we use a different animal for the medals.  The fun walks take place every 3rd Saturday of the month and our next fun walk will be held on the 19th of November 2016.

The distance of the walk is approximately 5km, is open to all ages and the route takes the participants past all the enclosures in the zoo. Evert Grobbelaar knows the zoo well and is responsible for laying out route that includes points of interest and adventure.  Gates open at 06h00 and the walk starts at 06h30. however during the winter months – June to August – the gates open at 06h30 and the walk then starts at 07h00. There is free parking available.

The entrance for children under the age of 18 is R30.00 per person. This price is for both members and non members. The entrance fee for adults [members] is R40.00 per person and for non-members R50.00. This price includes the medal and as an added bonus participants can then spend the day in the zoo.

The cost to become a member is R100.00 for a single person and R200.00 for a family consisting of 2 adults and 3 children under the age of 18years. Members are entitled to two free visits to the National Zoo and also participate in activities such as the Squatter Camp which will be held on the 29th of October. This is an overnight stay in the zoo and participants bring their own tents. A guided night walk through the zoo is included.

Our current project is to upgrade the farm yard, and with your next visit please visit the farm yard with its colourful tree house and buildings. We need donations of paint, wood, steel poles or any other building material. Our projects are funded mainly by the fun walks that are held every month as well as our outside kiosk that operates over weekends and public holidays.

We are planning a new year planner for 2017– this will not only include the medal information but also provide a sticker which can be placed on designated areas of the year planner. These stickers will be available at each fun walk.

For more information please contact our friendly secretary / the secretary of the Friends of the Zoo, Lettie Appelgein at 012 0323 0294 from Tuesdays to Thursdays from 09h00 to 13h00. Alternatively Lettie can be reached via email at info@fotz.co.za or visit our website at www.fotz.co.za .

You are welcome to contact Dirk Bester at 071 004 4221 or via email at dirkbester210@gmail.com.

Dirk Bester [Chairman] and Bettie Windell [Vice Chairman]  are at their posts at the start of every fun walk. You are invited by the Friends of the National Zoo to enjoy a never forgotten day at the zoo.

The chill of the winter months are upon us, but the Friends of the National Zoo still endeavour to create a fun and warm atmosphere at every Fun Walk, held every third Saturday of a month.

June, July and August are our coldest months of the year and therefore we have decided to start the Fun Walks a little later, 06:30 for 7:00.

Discounts are given to groups of people of 15 or more entering the Fun Walk, kindly let us know in advance to qualify for this discount by contacting us via email: info@fotz.co.za. This allows the queues to flow faster and for you to get started on the race quicker, filling on delicious food after the race in one easy electronic payment method.

The Friends of the National Zoo, are more than just friends, we are the heart of the community of the Zoo and pride ourselves in the support, love and care we provide to the animals, to the public and to the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa. We love meeting new people and we would love you to become a member and support our Fun Walks.  The Friends of the National Zoo is a non-profitable organisation. Please support us, to make our endeavours count.

Warm winter greetings.
